得意とする手術

脳腫瘍外科
脳機能マッピング及びモニタリング(ニューロモニタリング)と画像誘導(ニューロナビゲーション)を駆使して、大切な脳機能を温存する微細な脳腫瘍摘出手術には定評があります。ニューロモニタリングについては幾つもの新しい手法を世界に先駆けて開発しました。

機能神経外科
30年以上前に本邦で初めて脳深部刺激療法の開発と応用に着手し、パーキンソン病やその他の不随意運動(ジストニア、本態性振戦、脳卒中後不随意運動など)及び難治性疼痛に対する定位脳手術・脳深部刺激療法について、世界でも有数の経験を蓄積しています。その技術の研究について国内及び国外で指導的な役割を果たしています。

脳卒中・脳血管外科
脳低温下手術とニューロモニタリングの組み合わせによって脳機能を保護しつつ脳動脈瘤根治(クリッピング)手術、脳動静脈奇形摘出手術、脳血行再建(バイパス)手術や頚動脈内膜切除(剥離)手術などを行なう方法を確立し、数多くの実績を積んできました。神経外傷外科バージニア医科大学の頭部外傷センターに勤務して以来、多数の頭部外傷の手術と治療を担当しました。

脊髄・脊椎外科
変形性頚椎症、脊椎ヘルニア、脊柱管狭窄症、脊椎後縦靭帯骨化症、脊髄腫瘍、脊髄動静脈奇形、脊髄空洞症、脊髄髄膜瘤などの手術を、ニューロモニタリングを駆使して数多く実施してきました。

研究成果
脳腫瘍外科、機能神経外科、脳血管外科、神経外傷外科、脊髄脊椎外科に関する臨床的及び基礎的研究を進めてきました。その成果は、国際的に評価の高い学術雑誌に300編を越える欧文論文として発表しています。いずれの専門分野でも、脳神経外科領域では最も評価の高い米国脳神経外科学会機関誌(Journal of Neurosurgery)に論文が掲載されています。また、多数の教科書や一般向け著書も出版しました。
カリフォルニア大学に在職中は米国国立衛生研究所(NIH)から研究助成金を受け、帰国後は学術振興会科学研究費の他、文部科学省、経済産業省及び厚生労働省関連の研究助成金・委託費を継続的に受けています。また、米国脳神経外科学会(American Association of Neurological Surgeons)優秀論文賞(First Place Award、1998年)、米国脳神経外科コングレス(Congress of Neurological Surgeons)インテグラ・レクチャーラー賞(Integra Lecturer Award、2007年)、日本脳神経外科学会齋藤眞賞(2010年)などを受賞しました。
