要旨

Although influenza infection is usually self-limited, an infection may be fatal for the elderly and very young children,especially for the elderly. However, in the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, the highest mortality was among young healthyadults. The recent outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian H5N1 virus suggests the possibility of a new pandemic ofinfluenza. In Japan, rapid, near-patient test kits for influenza virus and the new anti-influenza drug, neuraminidase inhibitor,are now widely used and have changed the treatment for influenza strike. We are now, resulting in what may be considereda new era of influenza management.
